After reading a plethora of dystopian trilogies and sad drama novels, I wanted something to make me laugh out loud. I picked up
Swim the Fly by Don Calame and I did laugh out loud. Sean, Matt and Coop are three of the best buds looking for adventure. Each summer they set a goal for themselves. One might think from the title it is to swim the butterfly on the local neighborhood swim team; however, these boys are looking to set their sights on a live, in person, nude female. Needless to say, their plans go terribly awry which provides for the humor.
Swim the Fly focuses on Matt's dilemma which is to impress the cute girl on the swim team, not die trying to swim the butterfly in the melody relay, and accomplishing the summer goal. He quickly learns he is being used as a pawn and the quiet shy girl captures his attention.
Calame rounds out this trio with
Beat the Band and
Call the Shots. I did read
Beat the Band, which focused on Coop's teenage boy dilemmas and his crazy dad. I was not as impressed with
Beat the Band as I was with
Swim the Fly.
Call the Shots centers on Sean, but this one I did not read. Each book can stand on its own but they are funny enough to read all three.
