I loved Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil so much that I had to read another nonfiction book by John Berendt: The City of Falling Angels. This one is set in Venice, Italy and unfolds the mystery surrounding the fire at the Fenice Opera House (pronounced La Feniche) that was built in 1774. Once again, his nonfiction book reads like a novel and I couldn't put it down.
My family and I spent 2 days in Venice several years ago on a vacation and so the topic of this book intrigued me. However, this book takes you inside the "Real Venice" and introduces you to the real customs and history of the Venetian people. The touristy things that I enjoyed when I was in Venice like St. Marks and the Rialto Bridge just come to life when written about by Berendt. If you have always wanted to go to Venice and ride a in gondola but can't just make it this year, then pick up this book and you will have the next best thing.
