Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt

I absolutely loved this book. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt is actually based on true events that happened in Savannah, Georgia in the 1980's but it reads like a novel and so it is sometimes referred to as a "non-fiction novel" or "faction", a sub-genre popularized by Truman Capote. It spent an amazing 4 years on the New York Times best seller list. Anyway, Savannah, Georgia is now on my bucket list as a place I would love to visit because of this book.
The story is told from the perspective of a journalist from New York that comes down to Savannah and is so mesmerized by the place that he stays and writes a book about it. It highlights several eclectic residents of Savannah and revolves around a murder that happens in one of the historic homes. My favorite character is The Lady Chablis, a local drag queen and entertainer. Chablis provides a comical contrast to the more serious murder mystery. Who would ever expect a drag queen in a southern book about Savannah? I must tell you that I have never seen the movie and I don't know if I will Netflix it or not. Let me know if you have read the book or seen the movie and what you thought of either.
