Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen

The AHS Staff Book Club is meeting today after school to discuss Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen.
The book is amazing and has the most wonderful ending in the world.
The story is told from the perspective of Jacob Jankowski, 90 and travels back in forth in time between Jacob's present day in a nursing home and his adventures in the harsh world of the early Great Depression. Jacob is left destitute when his parents are killed in a traffic accident and so he has to drop out of Vet school at Cornell right before his final exams. Somehow, tossed by fate, he ends up working for the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth, a traveling circus. He falls in love with the beautiful equestrian performer Marlena, who is married to the circus' psychotic animal trainer and he also meets the other love of his life, Rosie the elephant. Rosie is by far my favorite character in the book. She was sold very cheaply to the third rate Benzini Circus because everyone thought that she was stupid. However, she is probably one of the most intelligent characters in the story. The only problem is that she only knows Polish. (Go figure) I don’t want to spoil the great ending so I will stop right here.
I'm actually really not a fan of the circus. My mom use to take me to the ones that would set up in the mall parking lot when I was young and I did enjoy the animals and eating peanuts. But I am really kind of scared of clowns.

The book is being made into a movie with Robert Pattison and Reese Witherspoon. I'm not so sure about the actors picked for the roles except for Rosie, of course, but I still want to see Hollywood's version.
